Over the years we’ve had numerous trees fall in the yard, especially those pesky and brittle Bradford Pears. Lovely trees, but so brittle they do little other than grow quickly and break. At the end of our patio is a little circular area that has long been the spot. It’s nearly always 10 degrees cooler than anywhere else in the yard, thanks in large part to an enormous pine tree we’ve had back there for ages. It’s been there for 30 + years. 3 months ago we all rejoiced to learn that some brave men in the US Military had caused Osama Bin Laden to no longer inhale, freeing up oxygen for those of us less likely to organize murderous thugs into bands of roving terrorists. Biden , the buffoon , reveals that the deed was done by the Navy SEALS – putting ALL of them in danger including their families. The rest of the Administration fared no better on the whole getting the story right the first time and only telling the bits that need to be told thing that goes with a deeply classified mission carried out during war time when people on the home front are still in danger. The Obama Administration told tale after tale of what happened there in Paahkeesstahn . All of the tales wrong and all of them differing from the last. Quite the Charlie Foxtrot of stupid. I’m on vacation in Chincoteague and right next door is Assateague . Assateague is a national park and wildlife refuge. Plus there’s a beach. A beach that you can visit until 10 PM at night. It’s a rather wonderful beach, especially for walking after dark. Chincoteague and Assateague are famous for the wild pony herds, you know, Misty of Chincoteague . I haven’t been wanting to jump in to the fray on my blog yet about Bin Laden’s death. I’ve been wanting to let the chips fall and see where they lay at the end of the day. That’s what’s going on here with this lack of hot fresh posting. The news – it’s either boring or overwhelming. Like the necessary discussion our nation needs to have about the tax code. It’s both boring and overwhelming. But we need to discuss how we tax, who we tax and the way we enforce those taxes. I think there’s evidence that the IRS is an abusive arm of a power hungry government. I think that is true no matter which party is in office. We need to have a frank conversation about how our tax code got so unweildy and confusing. We need to chat about who does and does not pay taxes. Why is it that people earning under, say $3,000 pay no taxes, but GE, which earns well over $300,000,000 paid none either? How did we create such a sea of labyrinthine taxes, rebates and subsidies that a giant international corporation paid not one damned penny of taxes? We need to talk about deductions and their abuse. We must discuss collection of taxes. That people pay their taxes right off the top, before that money ever goes into their bank account. We must begin the process of discussing a fairer tax code. One that does not punish middling success while rewarding billionaires and dead beats. [...]
